On Sunday, June 26, hereos, veterans, runners and volunteers packed Central Park for the annual Achilles International and Achilles Freedom Team - Hope & Possibility 5-miler. The stars of the day were the wounded veterans and racers with physical challenges who raced side by side with able-bodied runners, on hand-cycles, wheel chairs, prosthetics and crutches, and provided a healthy dose of inspiration to everyone participating.
This race is the Achilles International and the Achilles Freedom Team’s signature event. Their goal is simple: “bring hope, inspiration and the joys of achievement to people with disabilities” by being part of a community of support. Races like the Hope & Possibility 5-miler provide athletes with disabilities the opportunity to gain measurable physical strength and build confidence through their sense of accomplishment.
General Motors, a proud sponsor of the Achilles Freedom Team, was there to cheer the runners on and replenish their energy after the race by providing racers with goodie bags filled with fresh fruit, water and lots of carbs – New York bagels! Chevrolet also handed out shipping envelopes so people could send in their old cell phones for Cell Phones for Soldiers and had a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD on display.
Join Achilles International today to volunteer, and donate an old cell phone to Cell Phones for Soldiers.
