Tony Horton is the fitness master behind the highly popular program, P90X, and holds an impressive library of other fitness programs like Power 90, One on One with Tony Horton, and Ten Minute Trainer.  Tony has completed a “Ripped and Ready” Tour with Armed Forces Entertainment in support of our troops and spends time in D.C. whipping about 140 members of Congress into shape on Capital Hill.  Most recently, Tony launched the Bring It Minute, which puts Tony’s fitness enthusiasts in touch with him to answer questions about fitness, nutrition and all things X-treme!

Ready, set, go! This year’s National Press Club (NPC) “Beat the Deadline” 5K is fast approaching. And, Chevrolet is once again proud to join me (Tony Horton) as a supporter of such a great cause on Saturday, June 9.  The race benefits the NPC’s Journalism Institute that helps promote diversity within the profession through scholarships.

D.C.-area runners, listen up:  I invite you to join Team Chevy and myself for the NPC 5K!  Tell us in the comments section below why YOU should make the cut and join us to support this important cause by June 4 at 12:00p.m. EST. Check back here at 5:00 p.m. EST of June 5 where we’ll announce the five official members of Team Chevy, who will each receive a free race registration and a get set team warm-up led by me on race day!

The Chevrolet Volt, GM’s electric vehicle with extended-range, will be on display on race day for any and all runners and fans to stop by and check out.  Plus, the male and female winners will receive a one-week Chevrolet Volt loan!

And don’t forget to check out my “Bring It Minute” leading up to race day, as it will surely offer great tips to get you ready for the race!

Team Chevy Requirements: All Team Chevy runners must be residents of the greater Washington, D.C. area and agree to submit a guest blog post for “Driving the Northeast” highlighting their NPC 5K race experience. Team Chevy members will be contacted via email to arrange registration for the race.

Because I "bring it" every day! I've just crossed the one year anniversary on my 'return to health and fitness' journey where I've lost over 30 lbs through personal training, running and yoga (and now boxing!) This has renewed my love for running and inspired me to sign up for my first marathon which will happen this November in Philadelphia. My training program kicked in this week and I'm up for any gathering that brings local runners together to share what they love — running!

Thanks @LisaByrne and congrats on reaching your one year health and fitness anniversary. Keep up the good work!!

I should be on your Chevy Volt team for 3 great reasons:

-My roots! I'm from Sterling Heights, MI, just north of Detroit. Everyone I know is "car person" and we are, of course, big fans of the auto industry. My mom is also a journalist; I understand the importance of the Fourth Estate in the United States, especially as a DC resident.

-My fitness journey! Somehow I became everyone's "running friend" and casual dietician. I got passionate about getting in shape in 2009 with my first 5k that November and haven't looked back. I regularly get tweets from people asking about getting into running and making healthy choices and even organized my office running team. I've been there, the beginning is tough, but it's all achievable and just about anyone can be a runner!

-My personal record! OK, this one is more self-centered. I haven't gotten chance to really test my 5k time since that first race in 2009. I know I'm a faster runner, but the only chance I've had to race at this distance was a flop with several sections of involuntary walking. I would love to show how much stronger and faster I am now than I was then! I've got a wine tour later that day throughout northern Virginia and would be thrilled to spend the day celebrating a victory like this.

Basically, I have the personal background and experiences to be passionate about this cause and event. I would love to represent Chevy and support aspiring journalists next Saturday!

During the winter of 2011, P90X wasn't just another in-home, stale workout attempting to get unmotivated people who don't like going to the gym to work out occasionally — Tony's personality, energy, and infectious determination to push oneself beyond the comfort zone inspired me to complement my half marathon training schedule that led me to run my fastest 5k and half marathon ever (22:42 and 1:45:07). I was motivated to stay committed to the program all 90 days, without ever physically working out next to Tony. Ever since my 90 day journey "with" Tony, I've tried to excite others (my roommate, boyfriend, and even my mom and dad!) to catch the P90X fever. While at the Army 10 Miler Health & Fitness Expo in DC in October, I got up on stage with the Team Beach Body coaches and performed my best dive bomber push-ups (the only girl up there!) and had a blast connecting with the Beach Body coaches, listening to their stories, and watching them promote the mission of Tony's life-changing P90X program (and beyond). It would be an honor to BRING IT! with Tony (in real life!) on Team Chevy!

Because NO ONE enjoys "Bringing It" or running as much as I do! I can proudly say that I have completed the P90X program twice now and have never felt better in my life. I am a 21-year old fresh college graduate who has been inspired by Tony Horton to never stop working on myself in every area of my life, particularly on my body. Thanks to Tony, I can run harder, lift more, and exercise longer than ever before. As I said, I'm a fresh college graduate. I went through 4 years of trying to stay fit, amongst late night studying, full schedules, and a lot of easy ways out as far as eating is concerned. Many of my friends chose to go to the gym on occasion (thought never regularly), but not me. I chose to do P90X. Every day. Usually alone. I was the thorn in the side of my housemates, working out with P90X and running about 6K every other day, eating right, drinking my protein shakes, and encouraging others to join in and be fit with me. In 6 months, I went from the guy who was clearly gaining weight, to the guy who became RIPPED with P90X and who was focusing more than just about anyone he knew on his fitness. I have inspired many of my friends back home to now start in with P90X so that their lives can be changed just as positively as mine has been, thanks to this incredible man. Now that I have completed P90X for my second time, I have moved on to working out with Insanity and have purchased P90X2. I plan on completing Insanity, starting and finishing P90X2, and doing Insanity: Asylum by the end of this year! We only have one life to live and we have this one body for the rest of our lives. I choose to spend every day making it the best body it can be and making the best out of every day I will have for the rest of my life. I will never stop working on my fitness. As an actor, it is very important for me to be fit and look great and I have never trusted any program with doing this task for me like P90X. I am already signed up to work out with Tony this Thursday night and nothing would make me more honored than to meet the man who changed my life forever and run my first competitive 5K on his team.

    Thanks Matthew, great story!

I bring it every day because I know where I've been and where I'm going. I was once fat and way out of shape. I've worked hard to get from ~245 down to around 170. I've managed to get my life in order and start running. I've finished both a 10 miler and Half Marathon. I'm now working towards running the Marine Corps Marathon this fall. I decided on this one because my grandfather is a Marine (former GM worker) as well. Having never ran a 5K I would love to face the challenge of running a faster race that is a sprint rather than a long run. As I continue to run I always am looking forward to new races to join and run in.

As a runner who has always advocated for, and led, a healthy, active lifestyle, I would love to join Tony and Team Chevy at this Saturday's NPC Beat the Deadline 5k!

Tony, through P90X, has turned something I never thought I'd look forward to doing (working out alone in front of a TV) into something I genuinely enjoy that challenges me in a completely different way than running does. While I've yet to complete the entire 90-day program, I've been integrating various workouts into my routine to prevent the inevitable "injuries, plateau, and boredom" (to borrow Tony's words!) that result from long-distance running, and am working up to completing the full program and making it a lifestyle–not just a 90-day program!

Running with Tony and Team Chevy this weekend would be an awesome experience! I can think of no better way to spend the morning than pushing the limit with like-minded people for such a great cause!

Thanks for submitting astaroska! And best of luck during the Marine Corps Marathon this fall.

Thanks for posting, Eric! I love the goal you\’ve set for making fitness a part of your regular routine.

  • @mosesmosesmoses June 4th, 2012 11:52 am

Once upon a time, I was a fairly decent runner, with 5K times under 22 minutes, 10K times under 45 minutes, and one 100 minute half marathon. Sadly, at the age of only 36, that was more than half my lifetime ago. When the amazing @mocarbe told me about this opportunity, I thought it would be just the kick in the pants I needed to baseline myself as I prepare to move from northern Virginia to San Diego for my last Navy assignment before I retire. Six years of work inside the beltway have led to a not-very-health lifestyle, and I think my blog about the experience will serve as a warning to people that one can be a healthy weight (I weigh less now than when I was running my best times) but still not be healthy.
